Mia Hope: We are just satellites

11/02/10  ||  Smalley

This is yet another lousy label-sent album you probably won’t listen to, so let’s just cut to the chase, shall we? “We are just satellites” starts off kind of decent, with the opening track having some nice, atmospheric sounds, then some okay heavy riffing (though a bit formulaic). Some good lead guitar work later on starts to get my hopes up, but then their singer starts screaming over and over, and it’s kind of an annoyance. Still, not too bad so far! Then the second track starts and the singer keeps up with the screaming, only making it a lot shriller and whinier, just like an alarmed chicken, and he fucks the entire album over; doesn’t matter what you guys do from this point, this thing is screwed! Again, why the hell is this kind of singing popular? Does the entire metalcore generation have deficient hearing or something…? Here’s a helpful tip to improve your style; SHUT UP.

The clean singing here is crappy as well, so don’t bother holding your breath on that front. And again, while there is some good, enjoyable lead guitar to be heard, and the drummer is surprisingly skilled as well, the songwriting is very aimless and mediocre, with generic riffs & “chug-a-chug” breakdowns, and nothing really worth remembering.

With more palatable singing, this might’ve been an okay 5 album, nothing to write home about, but at least not an embarrassment, but alas, the awful vocals prevent that, so me-a hope that these guys don’t make another album, least not with this singer…
